Quick Reactions UK-Ole Miss

- Much to do in the media and blogs has been made about Kentucky's lack of third scorer. I am not a believer that Kentucky needs a "third scorer" but guys that can knock down open jump shots. Darius Miller - 22%, DeAndre Liggins - 17%, and Ramon Harris 17% for the season on 3 pointers. They were close to their season percentages today as they shot a combinerd 3-15 on threes. Harris and Miller also pass up countless other open threes. Kentucky does not need another 15ppg scorer just guys that can make threes in the 35% range.

- Ole Miss finally played defense the way I thought a team should against UK. Take away Meeks catch and shoot and force him into drives that have other defenders running at him. UK's lack of other perimeter shooters and his questionable decision making when attacking lead to numerous turnovers or low percentage shots from Meeks or those mentioned above.

- Patrick Patterson did score 24 points tonight on 8-12 shooting. However it seems like he gets a lot of his points in the garbage variety. He is not a dominating half court presence as everyone would have you believe. He really needs to develop some secondary moves and not everything going to his right. When is the opposition going to realize this??

- Jodie Meeks showed why he will not translate that well to the NBA right now. He stands only 6'4, short for NBA 2's, and David Huertas could get his shot off over him whenever he wanted.

- Although the boxscore on ukathletics says Ole Miss only outrebounded us 45-40, the number seemed way greater than that. Absolutely dismal team effort rebounding the basketball.

- Even though Ole Miss is now 41-5 at home under Andy Kennedy, this still is a team that is missing 3 of its best 4 players. Give credit to Ole Miss. They executed a great gameplan, shot the jumpers well, and outhustled UK. If UK ends not winning the SEC East they can look to this dismal effort as a reason why.

Rebounding killed us in this game, plain and simple. Ole Miss killed us on the offensive glass.

I'm surprised we couldn't find a way to get Meeks better looks for the whole 40 minutes. I think we should have had him bring the ball up the court some. At least then he would have the ball in hand.

Point guard play continues to be an issue. We better fix these problems soon, because everyone is going to watch this game film and use Ole Miss's defensive strategy.

I agree with everything except for a portion of the part on Patrick Patterson. Why we only see him picking up the garbage and not many of his secondary moves is because he gets so little touches inside. When Meeks is shut down we need a game plan to get him more touches in the post, roll outs and what not. If our other guys cant hit an open shot, learn how to pass it into the trenches.

But still..Good Post

I just don't understand how people can say we have to NBA ready players and put up garbage. I think Liggins and Miller just need to mature maybe give them more minutes I guess? They will be the difference come tourney time. I think Harellson should have got more playing time with Perry struggling. Oh well now they don't have the pressure of having to the run the table on the SEC now they just have to win it.

If you're Jodie Meeks, you take that (Ol Miss D) as a complement and regardless of IF UK did/was wanting him to take the ball up or not you find other ways to contribute. He was simply a non factor and player of the year candidates don't allow that to happen. You can't honestly think that Tyler H as much as I dislike him would simply give up if his offensive game was held in check... that's the difference between great and excellent... maybe even the difference between Big East/ACC talent to SEC this year which is so arbitrary and so hard to truly rate but really if you think about it through all the numbers not far fetched... Meeks played hard, but how often in that game could you say he really stood out... The thing is as a basketball player you think as YOU do not what bloggers, coaches whoever says... he plays Jodie Meeks ball WITH advice from coaches. Going back, their help side defense off screens given for Meeks wasn't the best so really he did miss some opportunities on his own regardless of being face guarded/the point to solid defensive stances by Miss. As stated, Meeks has many issues with his frame yet because of the way he plays. No one wants to comment on the numerous horrible shots he takes a game (See UNC game) but the same people turn that as a positive by saying he "has the green light". The green light is such a fine line for me, for players turn that into "I'm the MJ of my team" and refuse to see the good in a good strong drive that gets the interest of defenses collapsing which SHOULD follow in a pass to an open teammate who either shoots or makes another informed desision but "Green Light" players these days don't do that as often. If J.J Redick didn't play for Duke and got the green light his team would be middle of the pack wherever he played simply because he was allowed to make bad decisions if the risk of him hitting big shots was greater since he had all Americans around him anyhow. We're not Duke back then with a solid supporting cast; Jodie Meeks hitting 54 against Tenn was a great thing but come on, he scores 30 we're in a close ball game because we don't have a J.J. Redick team.

Just flowing for now...
